Federal Tax Credits
4/21/2009
Weatherization improvements help save energy and money. New federal tax credits may make energy efficiency upgrades in your home more affordable.
To qualify for the credit, the homeowner needs to obtain a copy of the “product eligibility certification” from the retailer, installer, or manufacturer at the time of purchase. Certifications should be kept on file with other tax records. The credit is available for any measures or systems placed in service from January 1, 2009 through December 31, 2010.
There is a $1,500 cap on the credit per home; some measures are not subject to the cap.
Various energy efficiency measures which may qualify for the tax credit are:
adding insulation to walls, ceilings, and floors
replacing windows and skylights
installing a metal roof, new exterior doors, solar water heating, or photovoltaic systems.
In addition, homeowners may receive tax credits for the installation of high efficiency HVAC systems and water heaters.
